Notes and quotes from Richard Sherman’s charity softball game

Richard Sherman hosted a charity softball game at Cheney Stadium Sunday, and as the Seahawks corner predicted before the game, a pretty entertaining show was put on by the two teams that were made up of Seahawks players, a few other celebrities like former Sonic Shawn Kemp and Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald, and event sponsors.

“The fans are going to see comedy,” Sherman said before the game. “It’s going to be comedy.”

And indeed there were some comical moments, from Doug Baldwin making a mess of things in left field to Russell Wilson staging a fake argument with umpire Lance Easley (yes, that Lance Easley), to a fake brawl that began when Doug Baldwin stepped into a Terrell Owens pitch before slowly charging the mound.

For the record, the Russell Wilson-coached team won 23-22 over the Marcus Trufant-led team, on which Sherman played. The score was tied 20-20 after seven innings and settled by a modified home run derby, with Walter Thurmond hitting the winning homer. Golden Tate, a former outfielder at Notre Dame, took home MVP honors. The game benefited Sherman’s new foundation, Blanket Coverage, which provides clothing and school supplies to children in need, as well as helpingahero.org.

Here’s what Sherman said about having a charity softball game:

“I’ve always wanted to start a foundation. That was important to me when I was younger, trying to help kids who can’t help themselves. Kids who are growing up in situation they can’t control. They can’t control how much money their parents make or where they’re born or where they’re raised. I want to help any way I can in evening out the playing field for them, making it so that they have a fair chance of getting a college education and getting out of the inner city or whatever situation they’re in. The softball game is just a fun way to raise money for the foundation and the kids.”

Asked if Sherman had to work hard to get him involved in the game, Wilson said, “Not at all. He just asked me once and I’m here. We’ve got a great group of guys. Bobby Wagner thinks he’s going to hit a home run, but he can’t hit at all. But just to be out here and help these kids, help kids trying to get their education, it’s pretty awesome.”
