ANACORTES — The Coast Guard says a 59-foot fishing boat that ran aground on Guemes Island near Anacortes is carrying nearly 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel.
A sheen surrounds the vessel and a salvage company has been hired to remove the fuel.
The Coast Guard received a mayday call Wednesday afternoon from the vessel Clam Digger, and the only person on board said it was taking on water. The Victoria Clipper ferry was the first vessel on the scene. It picked up the man from a life raft and transferred him to a Coast Guard boat.
The Clam Digger then ran aground on Guemes Island with about three feet of the bow above water. The owner has hired Global Diving and Salvage to recover the vessel.
