Aquafest overflows with entertainment

It’s time for Lake Stevens’ little lake-side party known as Aquafest.

It’s Aquafest 2013 and it’s here, it’s happening and it’s packed with entertainment. A few events have already begun, but the bulk of the fun kicks off on Friday.

Some of the usual stuff that we love is back, like horse and carriage rides, wakeboard events, fireworks, a boat parade, all sorts of contests such as pizza eating, a diaper dash and all sorts of tournaments such as disc golf and softball.

If you need to wait for the weekend, you could use The Grand Parade or as we’re calling it this year, the “Luau on the Lake” as your own starting point at 1 p.m. Saturday down Main Street.

And you do not want to drive. So park for free at Lake Stevens High School, 2908 113th Ave NE, where the shuttle runs every 15 minutes between the school and downtown behind the Mini-Mart.

On Saturday and Sunday morning the shuttle will also stop at the Firefighters Breakfast and on Sunday it will run between the high school, the North Lake Car Show and the downtown stop for the rest of the day.

Or you could take a free Aqua-fest Horse Drawn Wagon Ride, from City Hall parking lot, 1812 Main St. Each trip takes about 15 minutes and the family can ride. It’s a good view to the lake from the carriage for events along Lakeshore Drive. The rides are free but the horses do accept carrots. Photos and horse petting are also welcome.

Other events at Aquafest include the “Bite of Lake Stevens,” Friday night until 9 p.m.; from 10 a.m. to 9.p.m. Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday; the Davis Shows NW Carnival, which is ongoing through 5 p.m. Sunday; and the Kiddie Carnival, which is also ongoing through 5 p.m. Sunday.

The entertainment is outstanding for this year’s Aquafest and includes homegrown talent for families and adults.

Friday night there’s the Lake Stevens High School Drama Club and the movie “Surf’s Up,” for family fun and there’s country music by Trainwreck and comedy by Brad Upton.

On Saturday, Aquafest went all out to hire headliner band The Voodoos to perform at 7 p.m., ending at dusk when the fireworks show begins.

Other performers Saturday include acoustic folk musician Joachim Nordensson and blues and country rockabilly by Blue Rocket.

On Sunday, the entertainment continues with Aquafest Children’s Idol Finals, the pizza-eating contest and an exotic animals presentation called Predators of the Heart.

Aquafest 2013 runs from Friday through Sunday in downtown Lake Stevens. A full schedule of Aquafest events and more information are available at www.aquafest.org/index.asp.
