EVERETT — Statisically, the Everett AquaSox pitching staff had the highest team earned run average in the Northwest League coming into Thursday’s game, but you wouldn’t know that by how they are pitching recently.
The Sox (7-3 second half, 30-18 overall), who tallied three straight shutout wins earlier this week, narrowly missed throwing another as they beat the Boise Hawks 5-1 for their fifth straight win.
Everett starter Thyago Viera fell short of qualifying for the win by one out, but struck out seven in 42/3 scoreless innings. Relievers Tyler Olson (2-3), Richard White and Aaron Brooks combined to allow just one hit the rest of the way.
Sox catcher Carlton Tanabe slugged a solo home run, while Brock Hebert, Justin Seager and Chantz Mack each had two hits as Everett piled up 11 hits and did a much better job this time around against Boise starter James Pugliese.
Pugliese (3-3) allowed only two hits in five shutout innings against the Sox in a start on July 21, but Everett recorded four hits off the right-hander in the first inning alone and Mack’s RBI single gave the Sox a 1-0 lead.
Tanabe extended Everett’s advantage in the second with a solo shot to left field and the Sox capitalized on a Hawks error to score an unearned run later in the inning.
Everett continued to add on with Seager singling home Lonnie Kauppila in the fourth and Austin Wilson hitting an RBI single in the seventh.
Jacob Rogers hit a home run in the eighth inning for the only run of the game for Boise (4-6, 25-23).
