Northwest campers rarely put the words “camping” and “luxurious” in the same sentence, but the combo retreat called “glamping” does exist around here.
Pampered Wilderness at Millersylvania State Park near Tenino offers such accomodations: roomy tentlike cabins with real beds and mattresses, rocking chairs and rugs, heaters and refrigerators, and even the dog is welcome.
Wake up with fresh coffee and a continental breakfast en suite.
Take the pricetags off your new outdoors gear and head out to the park’s hiking trails or boating venues.
If indoors is more your speed, nearby Tenino has a museum, winery, antiques shops and a chocolatier.
At dinnertime, enjoy a catered meal in your sultan-style tent or grill your own on the barbecue.
The Rustic Retreat or the Safari Suite are $144.50 a night for two with a two-night minimum stay. Go to pamperedwilderness.com for more information.
The glamping experience at Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes near Roche Harbor on San Juan Island offers a few more options.
They offer the glam canvas cabins with real beds and furnishings, but no electricity. Cordless lanterns are provided.
A couple of families can occupy the duplex canvas cabins. And even more luxurious is the canvas cottage with electricity, a full bathroom and something every tent needs: a chandelier.
The retro draw here is camping in the woods in those cool silver Airstream trailers of yore.
Each has a double bed and a pull-out sofa, refrigerator, cooktop and microwave, and toilet and shower.
Prices vary depending on the number of guests and accomodations, but a two-night stay at a canvas cabin is about $448. Check them out at www.lakedale.com.
