CAMANO ISLAND — Two people were injured when a small plane crashed at Camano Island Airfield on Sunday.
The plane was a 1970s-era Cessna 182 that crashed just after 11:30 a.m. The pilot apparently was attempting touch-and-go landings, said Ed Wallace, a spokesman for the Island County Sheriff’s Office.
The plane was about 40 feet in the air on approach to the airfield when it stalled, said Levon Yengoyan, assistant chief of Camano Island Fire and Rescue. “His plane rolled over into the ground.”
There was no fire but the aircraft was a total loss, Wallace said. The airfield is on the northern part of the island at 1212 N. Moore Road.
A man and woman in their late 40s or early 50s were on board the plane. Several people who witnessed the accident rushed over to begin giving them medical aid, Yengoyan said.
The man was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett for treatment of chest pain. The woman was transported by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of a possible head injury and broken ankle, Wallace said.
No information was immediately available on the names or hometowns of the two people injured in crash.
The plane is registered to a man from Twisp, but it is not known if he was on board the aircraft, Wallace said.
The accident is being investigated by both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, according to Allen Kenitzer, an FAA spokesman.
