Political newcomer leads divided primary field for Lynnwood mayor

A political newcomer led the incumbent Lynnwood mayor and two Lynnwood city councilmen in a tight four-way primary in early returns Tuesday night.
Edmonds Community College administrator Nicola Smith led the early returns with 27.25 percent of the vote, with incumbent Mayor Don Gough leading City Councilman Mark Smith for the second position, 25.36 percent to 24.96 percent. Councilman Loren Simmonds trailed with 20.94 percent. The top two vote-getters in the primary advance to the general election.
