The sport of lacrosse may not be growing faster anywhere in the state of Washington than in the north Puget Sound region.
It’s starting to show in the collegiate ranks.
Snohomish’s Davyd Powell recently became the first boys prep lacrosse player from the north Sound region to earn a Division I scholarship. Powell committed to play lacrosse at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.
“It feels pretty cool, especially because I never thought it would actually happen,” Powell tweeted to The Herald. “My friends and family helped a lot!”
Powell is a midfielder and defender for the Panthers and finished his junior year with two goals, one assist and 56 ground balls in 14 games.
According to a press release, Powell is just the second north Sound high school lacrosse player to earn a roster spot with a D-1 school. In 2010, Lake Stevens High School graduate Meaghan Hess became the first after committing to play for New Jersey’s Monmouth University.

Snohomish High senior is first NCAA Div. I men’s lacrosse commit from North Sound
SNOHOMISH, Wash. – Snohomish High School senior-to-be Davyd (dah VEED) Powell has become the first all-time boys high school lacrosse player from the North Sound to commit to an NCAA Div. I men’s lacrosse program.
Powell, who platooned at long-stick midfield and defense as a 2013 junior with the Snohomish lacrosse program, committed to play for NCAA Div. I Canisius College following a visit to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference school in Buffalo, N.Y. on July 22.
As a freshman in fall of 2014, Powell will join a Golden Griffins squad that finished 2013 with a 3-10 record (2-4 in MAAC play). In 2012, the Griffs earned an NCAA tournament berth after winning the MAAC tournament.
Powell is just the second North Sound prep lacrosse player to earn a lacrosse roster spot with an NCAA Div. I school. In 2010, Lake Stevens High School graduate Meaghan Hess became the first after committing to play for New Jersey’s Monmouth University.
In 2013 at Snohomish, Powell finished his junior year with two goals, one assist and 56 ground balls in 14 Division I games after helping guide the program as a sophomore to a Division II Washington State Championship in 2012.
Powell’s NCAA lacrosse commitment comes on the heals of the strongest high school lacrosse class in Washington state history.
Washington state’s Class of 2013 includes eight seniors from North Sound high schools that will go on to play NCAA or NAIA lacrosse; Archbishop Murphy High School’s Frank Medlicott (NCAA Div. III Western New England College) and Nick Martin (NAIA Univ. of Great Falls), Everett High School’s Jared Hawkins (NCAA Div. III Augustana College), Jackson High School’s Ian Strong (NCAA Div. III Transylvania Univ.), Lynwood High School’s Cameron Warren (NCAA Div. III Carthage College), Kamiak High School’s Jordan Gagnon (NCAA Div. III Illinois Wesleyan Univ. ) and Nick Gregory (NCAA Div. III (Wittenberg Univ.) and Stanwood High School’s Joshua Smith (NAIA Univ. of Great Falls).
Glacier Peak High School graduate Amanda Hultz will play club lacrosse at Western Washington University while King’s High School graduate Juliet Jacobs will play for the club team at Furman University in South Carolina.
