WENATCHEE — The Transportation Department is telling drivers the North Cascades Highway is unlikely to reopen by this weekend.
Spokesman Jeff Adamson in Wenatchee says he hopes to be able to say Friday when crews expect to finish clearing mudslides. The timing is uncertain because of the number of large boulders that came down.
A 10 mile section of Highway 20 west of Rainy Pass was closed by a Saturday night thunderstorm with intense rain that covered the roadway in eight places with mud, rocks and trees. The biggest slide was about a quarter-mile long and 25 feet deep.
The scenic drive through the North Cascades National Park is traveled by about 2,000 vehicles a day in the peak summer period.
