BOTHELL — Work to replace the nearly 50-year-old Swamp Creek Bridge on Carter Road west of Bothell is expected to finish this fall.
Crews have dismantled the old two-lane bridge near the King-Snohomish County line. They’re replacing the 1966 structure with a longer, wider span. When finished, the new bridge will include sidewalks on both sides and shoulders for bicyclists.
The old bridge only had a sidewalk on one side and was weight restricted to 16 tons.
The ongoing work has shut down Carter Road east of Lockwood Road since June 20 to motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. Carter Road is scheduled to reopen by Oct. 1.
Some work on the project is likely to continue into next year, including final paving and planting a natural area northwest of the bridge.
The new bridge is designed without the center piers of the old structure, which collected debris in Swamp Creek.
The project’s estimated cost is $3.7 million. The Federal Highway Administration is paying 80 percent of cost, Snohomish County for other 20 percent.
