2 Sno-Isle libraries getting upgrades

LYNNWOOD — The Lynnwood Library will be closed for remodeling for most of September.

A shorter closure also is planned at the Marysville Library between Sept. 2 and Sept. 6, said Ken Harvey, spokesman for the Sno-Isle Libraries system.

Both libraries are being rearranged to make room for new technology centers. The centers, called “Creative Commons,” will be about 1,000 square feet each. They’ll combine old and new gadgets for use by students, business groups and entrepreneurs, Harvey said. The technology includes Apple computers and audio and video editing equipment.

The Lynnwood Library also will get new carpets, new paint and improvements to the restrooms. The Lynnwood Library is the most popular branch in the local library system, with nearly 1 million items borrowed in 2012, Harvey said.

The Lynnwood closure starts Sept. 6 and could run through Sept. 29. It may be possible to pick up items on hold at the library during the closure, but the details still are being worked out.

During the closure, people in Lynnwood can go to nearby libraries in Brier, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace and Mukilteo, Harvey said. People in Marysville can go to Arlington, Granite Falls, Lake Stevens and Snohomish.

The remodeling work in Lynnwood is funded from a reserve account shared by the city and the library system. The work will cost an estimated $250,000.

The library district estimates costs for the two technology centers at a combined $250,000. The Lynnwood Library building was built in 1971, at 25,920 square feet. The library was annexed into the Sno-Isle system in 2006.
