PORTLAND, Ore. — Students who took the ACT college-entrance exam in Washington state and Oregon scored higher than their peers nationwide.
The ACT is scored on a scale of 1 to 36. Washington’s average composite score of 22.9 and Oregon’s average composite score of 21.5 beat the national average of 20.9.
Nationally, the class of 2013 performed slightly worse than the 2012 class in all four subject areas — English, math, reading and science. Oregon’s class of 2013 improved in English and held steady in the other subjects.
State schools chief Rob Saxton says holding steady is not good enough, and he wants to see improvement to ensure all students are ready for college.
White and Asian students outperformed Latino, Native American and African American students, and Saxton says the widening gap should be a “wakeup call” for the state.
