The unfortunate reality of the NFL is that good players and good people get released this time of year, often purely for monetary reasons, and that appears to be what happened to Pro-Bowl fullback Michael Robinson. A day before teams are required to get their rosters down to 53 players, Robinson wrote on Twitter what looks like a goodbye message to fans.

There has been speculation throughout the preseason that Robinson, who was scheduled to make $2.5 million in 2013, could be a victim of the numbers game. It’s not that the Seahawks were over the cap, but they want to free up cap space to roll over to 2014, money that could help with re-signing young core players. Cutting Robinson will upset some fans, but if it frees up money that can help with re-signing the likes of Richard Sherman or Earl Thomas next year, then it’s an understandable cost of doing business in the NFL.
With Robinson presumably now gone, the Seahawks have two options at fullback, Derrick Coleman and Spencer Ware, though while Ware is listed as a fullback, he has spent more time at running back, the position he played at LSU, during the preseason. The Seahawks have also been known to use tight ends in the backfield from time to time, something they actually did with Zach Miller on the first play of Thursday’s game.
And don’t rule out the possibility of Robinson returning to Seattle at some point. Robinson has been sidelined with a virus for two weeks, and Pete Carroll indicated he may not be healthy for the opener, so if there isn’t a market for Robinson over the next couple of weeks, the Seahawks could certainly look to re-sign him at a lower price somewhere down the road.
