SPOKANE — The Spokane Indians opened the final series of the regular season with five unanswered runs on their way to a 6-3 win over the Everett AquaSox on Saturday night.
Everett (19-17 second half, 42-32 overall) gave away two runs in the seventh when shortstop Jack Reinheimer, trying to make an inning-ending double play, allowed Evan Van Hoosier and Jamie Jarmon to score on an overthrow. Jordan Akins added a two-run home run in the eight for a 5-2 lead for Spokane.
The Sox cut it to a two-run game with Phillips Castillo’s home run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Indians scored again in the ninth for the game’s final run.
Everett starter Thyago Vieira kept Spokane (18-18, 38-36) scoreless through five innings with four strikeouts, giving up three hits and a walk.
But Spokane jumped on reliever Tyler Olson in the sixth with Marcus Greene’s home run to left field.
Spokane pitchers had 11 strikeouts through 62/3 innings. Everett managed 14 hits, but left 12 runners stranded.
Spokane needs a sweep of the three-game series to earn the second-half title in the Northwest League North division and a playoff berth.
