Your guide to Everett fun for September

Brisk, misty mornings make way for the embrace of afternoon sun. Big yellow buses filled with children take to the road early each morning. Days slowly begin to draw shorter. Fall is in the air.

We love fall. Fall means we get to break out our awesome sweater collection. And we get to indulge in a cornucopia of fall foods (and beer). Local wineries begin fall crush, corn mazes and pumpkin patches abound – with all this fall fun, how do you decide what to do? Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of must-see attractions and events.

Nothing says fall like the sound of a slapshot echoing through Comcast Arena or thousands of wild fans violently ringing cowbells in hasty delight. Everett Silvertips hockey is just around the corner. The season-opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Sept. 21 and with Coach Constantine at the helm again, our beloved Silvertips will undoubtedly have a season to remember. Check for ticket availability www.everettsilvertips.com. The opener will sell out, but that’s not the only thing going on that day. Here’s the full lineup:

Start your day off with the Bubble Run, which begins on Comcast Arena, 2000 Hewitt Ave., Everett at 9 a.m. Clad in white t-shirts, thousands of participants will run, walk, dance and play across three miles of frothy bubble fun. You can register at www.bubblerun.

After the race, stick around for Comcast Arena’s 10th anniversary Block Party. The fun immediately follows the Bubble Run and includes live music, gourmet food trucks (we just confirmed that NOSH, Jemil’s Big Easy, Bite Me Cupcakes, Sammich Truck and a few others will be there), a beer garden and more. Also happening on Sept. 21: the Everett Coho Derby’s 20th anniversary. The derby has a ton of prizes (how does a $10,000 grand prize sound?) and more than 2,000 participants, making it one of the largest fishing derbies in the northwest. And if you’re looking for kid-friendly activities between the Bubble Run, Coho Derby and Comcast Arena Block Party, you’ll want to check out Imagine Children’s Museum’s Derby Days. Family-friendly performances, engaging activities and food vendors will line the street in front of the museum at 1502 Wall St., Everett on both Saturday and Sunday. Are you a fan of drinking beer from ginormous steins? Gorging on ample amounts of sauerkraut and bratwurst? You, my friend, were made for Oktoberfest. There’s a couple Oktoberfest-themed celebrations going on around town in September. Here are a few we are aware of:

Lazy Boy Brewing Company’s second annual Oktoberfest is from noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 7. Get your fill of gourmet brats and warm pretzels and gulp down 28 ounce mugs of delicious Oktoberfest and Hefeweizen ales (we encourage responsibility; find a designated driver or call a cab, such as Yellow Cab at 425-259-2000). Schack Art Center’s annual Schack-toberfest kicks off on Sept. 26 and runs through Sept. 29. Pick (and purchase) your favorite glass pumpkin from more than 300 colorful and unique pumpkins handcrafted in the Schack glassblowing studio. Where you’ll find us: Beer and Brat Night is from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 27. Let local breweries wet your whistle, savor a gourmet brat with all the fixins’ and enjoy live music while watching Jesse Kelly and his team create “The Great Glass Pumpkin” in the Schack hot shop. And, keep in mind that the awe-inspiring native artwork of James Madison will be on display in the Schack gallery through Sept. 21. Details, tickets at www.schack.org.

Maybe you’re not quite ready to head indoors for hibernation. We’ve got a few things you’ll enjoy, too.

The Port of Everett hosts the second annual Wheels on the Waterfront Classic Car Show on 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7. In addition to the sweet rides on display, Scuttlebutt Brewing Company will be hosting a beer garden. There will be live music, food and other vendors, awards ceremony, charity drawings and more. The event benefits a very worth cause: Providence General Foundation’s Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. Also on Sept. 7, Flying Heritage Collection will be reenacting the Battle of Britain. Watch as the German-built Messerschmitt Bf 109 takes on the British-built Supermarine Spitfire in the skies over Everett. They’ll be taking to the skies again on Sept. 21 for Air War Over Russia Day. The Russian-built Ilyushin II-2M Shturmovik will go head-to-head with the German-manufactured Focke-Wulf Fw 190. Both events take place between noon and 1 p.m. Details available at www.flyingheritage.org.

The waterfront music series may have come to an end, but there’s still plenty of live music happening around Everett in September. Here’s a list of what we’ve seen so far:

• Sept. 5: Local singer/songwriter Annemarie Russell will be playing a benefit concert for Housing Hope at Port Gardner Bay Winery, 2802 Rockefeller Ave. The show is from 7 to 9 p.m. Enjoy a glass of locally-made wine while supporting a great local charity.
• Sept. 7: Hometown Hootenanny. Join the Hometown Band as they perform Legends of Nashville, a collection of classic country songs. The event takes place at the Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave. Tickets available at www.everetttheatre.org.
• Sept. 8: Bob Strickland &Friends Jazz Jam. Head to the recently-updated Prohibition Gastropub, 1414 Hewitt Ave. from 5 to 8 p.m. and see some of the best local jazz musicians play live at Bob Strickland’s Jazz Jam. Free parking at the EverPark Garage, 2815 Hoyt Ave. It’s one block from the restaurant.
• Sept. 11: Sets in the West. The final show for the Sets in the West outdoor music series at Wetmore Theatre Plaza, 2710 Wetmore Ave. is at 5 p.m.. Everett synth-rock duo I Will Keep Your Ghost joins Seattle party-machine Head Like a Kite for what’s sure to be a full-blown dance extravaganza. Did we mention the show is free? Beer garden for ages 21 and older and small-bites available for purchase from Lombardi’s Italian Restaurant. Details at www.setsinthewest.org.
• Sept. 28: Everett Music Initiative presents The Maldives, Rose Windows and Learning Team. EMI was able to put together a killer lineup that includes Sub Pop’s newest roster addition, Rose Windows. Joining them will be Seattle’s The Maldives and Bellingham-faves Learning Team. Together, this will be one of the best lineups to hit Everett in a few (I know, we always say that — but it’s true). • Sept. 29: Pacifica Chamber Orchestra. Maybe classical music is more your style? PNCO kicks off their fourth season at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 2936 Rockefeller Ave. Performance information and tickets available at www.pacificachamberorchestra.org.

And don’t forget that we’re in the final few weeks for both the Everett Waterfront Farmer’s Market, 1600 W. Marine View Drive, on Sundays until Oct. 6 and the Friday Everett Farmer’s Market at the Everett Mall, 1402 SE Everett Mall Way, ending Oct. 4. There’s a ton of fresh produce hitting the markets right now and plenty of other items (fresh flowers always scores us points with the misses).
