Zonta to focus on violence against women
Zonta Club of Everett is focusing on violence against women this fall with its “Zonta Says No!” campaign.
At a breakfast meeting Aug. 8, experts from three Snohomish County human service agencies kicked off the focus topic by answering questions about violence against women.
The panelists were Elysa Hovard, outreach supervisor at Cocoon House, who spoke about violence against teen and young adult women; Lisa Nicholson, director of legal advocacy for Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County, who shared a legal perspective on violence against women; and Nathalie Gauteron, outreach manager for Senior Services of Snohomish County, who shared her professional knowledge and elder abuse.
In October, the club will distribute personal care kits to Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County.
On Nov. 25, Zonta members will wear orange to kick off 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, including a local awareness day on Dec. 4.

Rotary funds beds for kids
St. Vincent de Paul North Sound Council recently announced a $2,000 donation from the Marysville Rotary Club for its Beds for Children Program.
All of the funds will buy beds for children who are often sleeping on the floor.
Machinists Union raises $10,000 for charity
The annual Bill Baker Memorial Steel &Wheel SuperShow raised more than $10,000 for Guide Dogs of America.
More than 60 classic and custom cars and motorcycles were entered in the show, which took place Aug. 17 at Machinists Union District Lodge 751’s Everett Union Hall. Awards were presented in 18 categories, while volunteers grilled hot food and the local band Sir Real provided live music.
The annual event is hosted by Machinists Union Local Lodge 751-A, which is affiliated with District 751.
Guide Dogs of America is a California-based charity that provides service dogs and training in their use free of charge to people who are blind or have impaired vision from across the United States and Canada.
District 751 is the No. 1 fundraiser for Guide Dogs of America. Over the past four years, it’s raised more than $1 million for the charity.
