EDMONDS — Edmonds police officers shot and wounded a man who reportedly was carrying a rifle while walking down a road Saturday morning.
The man, 27, of Edmonds was in serious condition at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. His identity was not released. Information about the extent of his injuries also was not immediately known.
As is standard in police shootings, detectives with the Snohomish Multiple Agency Response Team were being brought in to investigate.
The incident began with a phone call at about 7:30 a.m., alerting police to the man with a rifle, said Aaron Snell, an Everett police officer who serves as a spokesman for the SMART team.
Two Edmonds officers encountered the man in the 1200 block of Puget Drive, Snell said. A “verbal confrontation” followed, and ended in gunshots, he said.
No details were immediately available about how many shots were fired or by whom. That is what detectives are investigating, Snell said.
KIRO-TV reported on Twitter that the man was shot after he refused to put down his weapon and that multiple shots were fired.
The two officers involved in the incident were unharmed.
Both officers were placed on administrative leave, as is standard in such cases. Puget Drive was closed near the intersection with Olympic View Drive until about 2 p.m. Saturday.
Access also was temporarily shut down to nearby Edmonds Elementary School.
