EVERETT — An Edmonds man who was shot and wounded by police on Saturday reportedly suffers from schizophrenia.
At least two witnesses saw Aaron K. Eckley, 27, point a rifle at police officers during a confrontation, according to the arrest report filed Wednesday evening.
Eckley, who spent several days recovering at a Seattle hospital, declined to attend an initial court hearing scheduled Thursday in Everett District Court.
Eckley was being held for investigation of two counts of second-degree assault with firearm. He has no known criminal history.
Neighbors in the area of the 1200 block of Puget Drive in Edmonds called 911 about 7:30 a.m. to report seeing Eckley walking around with a .22 caliber rifle, according to court papers.
Two Edmonds officers arrived and approached Eckley.
“He failed to follow the officers’ repeated commands, and instead, he pointed the rifle at them,” court papers show.
The officers opened fire. Eckley was hit at least once in the side. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on Wednesday after being released from the hospital.
Both officers were placed on administrative leave. The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team is investigating, as is standard in cases where officers use potentially fatal force.
It was the fourth officer-involved shooting in the county this year.
