Kudos to Mill Creek police officer Mike Harris for organizing Bike Night. (Tuesday article, “Bikes replace boards for a night at Mill Creek skate park.”) We have a skate park here in Granite Falls and see a similar situation of bikes vs. skateboards, and teenagers vs. children, with scooters added to the muddle. However, am I the only mom who noticed two young adults in the pictures not wearing bike helmets, including one who works at a bike shop? How is that even OK? Can officer Mike Harris get these kids helmets from the police station or the local fire station? Why not promote safety first and require that these kids wear helmets if they want to use the park? I’ll go one further … why isn’t there a state law requiring all bicycle/skateboard/scooter riders to wear helmets? Bet the insurance companies would back that initiative in a heartbeat.
