ARLINGTON — Harley Robb is this year’s winner of the Arlington Lifetime Achievement Award.
A former school board member, Robb is perhaps best known for his volunteer work with the Stillaguamish Valley Pioneer Museum, where he continues to lead group tours and serve on the board of directors. In August, he was master of ceremonies for the third time at the annual Pioneer Picnic.
The presentation of the lifetime achievement award is set for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Stillaguamish Senior Center, which hosts the breakfast. The event doubles as a fundraiser for the center.
“We are pleased to honor Harley Robb and his service to our country and our community,” said Jo Olson, director of the senior center.
Robb was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Arlington, the oldest of three children of Pearlie and Marguerite Robb.
At Arlington High School, he served as a class president, played basketball and participated in school plays. He joined the Army after graduation and during World War II, Robb served with the 106th Infantry Division in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, Robb returned home to Arlington and opened an auto repair shop next his family’s tire shop. In 1949, he married Delores Spiering, a Darrington High School graduate and registered nurse at Arlington’s hospital. Their daughter Lynn is a commercial artist and college instructor in Los Angeles. Their daughter Janis is retired from her job with the state of Oklahoma.
In the mid-1950s, Robb went to work for the Arlington Post Office, from which he retired in 1982.
He coached Little League baseball, served two terms on the Arlington School Board and was a 40-year officer with the Arlington Community Chest, the forerunner to United Way. When Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church was ready for a new sanctuary, Robb led the building committee that oversaw its construction. Today, Robb continues to serves as an usher at church.
His wife Delores, who joined him in all of his volunteer work, died in 2009.
Robb’s hobby is woodworking and his shop is full of wooden models of various construction vehicles.
