Regarding the letter, “Disappointed in dock’s closure”: The Tulalip Tribes shutdown of the two fishing piers at Priest Point not only affects childeren, but also the elderly, disabled, poor and mixed-marriage tribal families.
On Aug. 31, tribal police threatened to tow vehicles and arrest the above group of people from all walks of life and races and abilities if seen with a pole.
It was heart-breaking that a non-tribal father and grandfather who were trying to put food on the table were told that only the 4-year-old Tulalip tribal member son was allowed to fish.
This racially segregated the family and shows that the Tulalip policy disrespects the family unit.
The only other place to fish for local residents who can’t boat due to finances or disabilties who cannot bank fish is Kayak point at $7-$70 park fee plus gas, if you can drive or get a ride.
Guess what? Tulalip tribal fisher people are now focusing all fishing efforts on surrounding all of Kayak Point county park from beaches to fishing pier with gill nets.
