Wednesday links -- 49ers fans found noise 'excessive'
On Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle published a letter to the editor from a couple who was, "appalled by the unsportsmanlike conduct of the Seattle Seahawks and their fans, juiced on noise, which surely creates as big an advantage over an opponent as any performance enhancing drugs." The letter goes on to suggest a new rule limiting how loud a crowd can be. It's quite hilarious. And even better, Judy Spelman and Rich Schiller aren't alone in this opinion, because the next day, the Chronicle published another letter to the editor supporting the original, saying, "It wasn't a game of skill anymore; it was an exhibition of excessive stadium noise."
So you got that? Quit being such mean hosts, 'Hawks fans.
OK, enough on that ridiculousness.
Robert Mays of Grantland.com was not offended by the noise at Sunday's game, but rather impressed by what he saw. He writes about how the Seahawks have become the coolest team in the NFL.
Over at MMQB.com, Richard Sherman, who writes an occasional column for the Sports Illustrated spin-off site, talks about how he and the Seahawks avoid letdowns from week to week. That's obviously a relevant topic this week seeing as the Seahawks are going from a huge rivalry game against San Francisco to a game against Jacksonville, an 0-2 team that looks very much like the worst in the NFL.
UPDATE: Speaking of Sherman, he was just named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Sherman spent much of Sunday night locking down Anquan Boldin, who a week after catching 13 passes for 208 yards against Green Bay, had just one catch for seven yards in Seattle. Sherman also had an interception. That's his second DPOY award since Week 10 of 2012.
Mike Tanier of Sportsonearth.com has a cool breakdown looking at what makes the Seahawk defense so effective.
And finally, if you come to this space for more than just football, I used the Seahawks off day to take a look at the coaching job being done by Sigi Schmid, who has turned the Sounders from a midseason disappointment to arguably the best team in MLS.
