As a result of recent letters in the newspaper, I have been asked if a fire commissioner would be involved in the day-to-day operations of firefighter/medics. I have also been asked if a fire commissioner would assist as a doctor on emergency calls.
As a former Camano Island Fire Commissioner, I can state that the role of a commissioner is to help develop the district’s overall strategic plan and long term vision. Working with the administrative staff, the fire commissioners guide the district through the adoption of policies and procedures. Fire commissioners are not directly involved in the day to day operations of the fire district.
Dr. Paul Zaveruha, the Medical Program Director at Island County is responsible for the management of pre-hospital emergency medical care and services for Camano Island Fire and Rescue. Fire commissioners do not and will not respond to emergency medical calls.
