LAKE STEVENS — The Stanwood volleyball team relied on its experience to overcome adversity against Lake Stevens on Tuesday night.
After the Vikings blew out the Spartans in the fourth set to force a fifth game, Stanwood responded with a dominating performance of its own to win the nonconference match 22-25, 26-24, 25-22, 10-25, 15-4.
“It’s comforting to have nine seniors, two juniors and two sophomores who are really athletic,” said Spartans head coach Erik Titus. “They don’t get flustered and have a strong mentality. It was really good to see.”
One of those juniors, Titus’ daughter, Krista, marshalled the Stanwood defense with 34 digs, while sophomore setter Kitt Campbell had 20 assists and senior Rebecca Hardenbrook put away 10 kills.
“(Krista) had as good of a game as a libero that we’ve had,” said Titus. “Our two setters (junior Nicole Swenson and Campbell) played well and (Hardenbrook) swung well and its good to see her gain confidence.”
Amber Dalgleish recorded 37 assists, Kendall Swanson had 14 kills and Bre Resor added 10 kills for the Vikings, who have given Stanwood fits over the years.
“Lake Stevens traditionally have been a very, very good team and beaten us every time home and away,” said Titus. “When they were in system, it was pretty rough for us. A couple of their kids could really blister it down the line and they did a really good job of putting us under pressure.”
