BEND, Ore. — An 86-year-old Oregon man convicted of killing his wife of 39 years has been sentenced to life in prison.
The Bend Bulletin reports that Judge A. Michael Adler handed down the sentence Wednesday, saying it’s not certain how much longer Lawrence Loeffler will live but all of that time will be behind bars.
Loeffler was in a wheel chair at the trial and used a breathing device.
On Tuesday, a jury found him guilty of murder.
His lawyers argued Loeffler acted under extreme emotional distress in January, believing 83-year-old Betty Loeffler and his stepdaughter plotted to kill him.
The prosecution said he killed his wife in cold blood, forcing her from the kitchen onto a deck at their home near La Pine and shooting her twice in the head.
