Once again, letters propagating more misinformation regarding Congress’ health plan as people are trying to make an informed decision on Obamacare. A few years ago, I remember people saying they wished for the same health care as Congress had. As originally written, Obamacare may have given them that. Various amendments to water it down have made Obamacare less than what Congress already had, so Congress may have elected to exempt itself from Obamacare.
Members of Congress are under the Federal Employee Health Benefit program and choose an insurance plan for which they pay a premium and the government pays the rest. The member chooses an insurance plan based on the amount of copays and deductible he/she wishes to assume for the amount of premium they wish to pay, and it lasts as long as they serve. Not for life, and not for free. Much like the health coverage provided by employers like Costco. Close to home you may find it interesting that Congresswoman Jaimie Herrera-Beutler (R-Wash.) from Vancouver who just had a baby with a usually fatal birth condition that has required expensive hospitalization may be covered under FEHB, and if she were to serve long enough could have Abigail Rose covered until age 26 under Obamacare, as all insurance providers are bound by that law.
