SEATTLE — Two high-powered offenses put on a defensive battle at King’s high school as both squads struggled to find the end zone in a contest of the two of the top teams in the Cascade Conference.
King’s was able to strike first when Knights quarterback Koa Wilkins connected with wide receiver Nick Severson on a 48-yard pass to put King’s up 7-0 in the first quarter. The touchdown would be the only trip for either team to the end zone as the Knights (3-0, 4-1) defeated Sultan 7-3 on Friday night.
The combined 10-point total comes after both team’s had put up a combined 204 points in their past three games. King’s managed to hold the Turks to just 54 yards of total offense in the first half.
Sultan’s second half gave them multiple opportunities with field position in Kings’ territory on four consecutive drives. The Knights defense managed to only give up a 32-yard field goal with two minutes and eight seconds left in the third quarter.
“I got to give credit to our interior linemen, ” said Knights head coach Jim Shapiro on his team’s multiple defensive stands. “Donavan Ishmeal and Ethan Vyhmeister were really clutch especially in that final drive. For us, we wanted them to throw the ball and they did exactly what we were hoping for in that second half.”
King’s fumbled on their first drive of the second half and later fumbled in late in the fourth quarter to give Sultan a chance to take the lead. The defense however stopped the Turk’s at every opportunity and running back Chris Yan’s late 34-yard run into Sultan territory — their one and only trip there in the second half — to seal the win.
“Offensively we really hurt ourselves,” said Shapiro. “We had multiple turnovers, multiple fumbles and we weren’t able to secure the ball. It was definitely good to get the early score. Luckily Yan did exactly what we needed him to do late and he got good blocks from all 10 of our guys!”
