SANDPOINT, Idaho — The Lake Pend Oreille School District in northern Idaho is considering a proposal to arm teachers and will take public comments on the matter.
The Bonner County Daily Bee reported the district school board is meeting Tuesday at the Sandpoint High School auditorium to discuss a plan to train and arm select school staff members.
Trustee Chairman Steve Youngdahl introduced the plan at a board meeting two weeks ago.
Youngdahl said armed school staff could be effective at stopping a threat to students before police have a chance to respond.
He has proposed that certain staff members be trained and licensed to carry concealed guns. He said their identities would only be known only to law enforcement officials and school administrators.
