The Oct. 2 interview with Howard Lincoln regarding the current situation with the Seattle Mariners was almost laughable unless you are a true-blue Mariners fan. Lincoln’s comments essentially said that the Mariner fans should be satisfied that they have such a nice stadium to watch baseball in and to enjoy the good food and amenities.
The priorities of Lincoln, Chuck Armstrong and apparently Jack Zduriencik (how he got hired as general manager I’ll never understand) is to protect the bottom line and keep fans in the seats (something that has not been happening lately with attendance dropping every year). These are business people trying to run a baseball team and putting a winning team on the field is low on their list of priorities.
The Mariner farm system is producing no real “star” players. The exorbitant salary given to Felix Hernandez was supposed to make everybody happy and he turns around and has a mediocre season at best. The real answer is local ownership with upper management committed to spending the money necessary to put a competitive and contending team on the field.
Lou Piniella and Eric Wedge both moved on because of this lack of commitment by the ownership and upper management. I agree with a recent letter writer to The Herald. The current upper management does resemble the Three Stooges — except nobody’s laughing. Oh, well. There’s always next year!
