EVERETT — An Everett man with a long criminal history remained jailed Thursday after allegedly being caught with methamphetamine and a firearm following a fatal shooting.
Robert James Scott Jr., 39, died Tuesday after receiving a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to court papers.
Police believe Heath E. Mitchell, 37, to be the shooter, according to court papers. Mitchell has not been charged in the killing. He was being held Thursday for investigation of the drugs that reportedly were found on him when he was arrested.
Police also are investigating Mitchell, a convicted felon, for possessing a Smith and Wesson revolver they say was in a backpack they watched him toss into a dumpster.
When police searched the hotel room where Mitchell was staying, they reportedly found meth, heroin, pills and packaging materials. Mitchell admitted he was selling drugs from the room, police said. He has multiple convictions for drugs, property crimes and weapons violations.
Scott had similar history. He was released from prison in August after serving time for shooting a man during a 2010 attempt to collect a drug debt.
