Regarding the letter, “Obamacare eats away at Medicare”: The writer raised some interesting issues. Unmentioned was the fact that the 47 percent of the voters that did not pay taxes last year don’t plan on paying any federal income tax this year. Remember the flak that the GOP candidate got on that remark? No one said it wasn’t true, just that he was dividing the population. He didn’t divide us, the tax system did.
Maybe if the NFL, MLB and NBA were not considered to be nonprofits and paid their taxes like Bill’s Plumbing or Hank’s Home Construction, the 47 percent wouldn’t have as much impact. When all this free medical insurance happens (surely you don’t expect someone who doesn’t pay taxes to not get enough subsidies to fully fund their insurance.) Read “subsidies” as “federal funds” or tax money that will come from your pocket. That is only true if you pay federal taxes, of course.
