EVERETT — The Jackson boys tennis team defeated Cascade 5-2 to finish another season undefeated.
The victory for the Timberwolves marks the 82nd consecutive win for head coach David Hutt and his squad and it’s the fifth straight season they’ve finished unbeaten.
“It’s an odd sensation,” Hutt said on his team’s season. “I tell the kids we need to lose more so that we can feel what it’s like to have some adversity.”
The top two players in the Wesco 4A South, The Bruins’ Patrick Chung and Jackson’s Ben Mietzner, met in the No. 1 singles match with Chung winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
“Patrick and Ben were the top players last year too,” said Hutt. “Chung will probably be the number one seed (in districts) and Ben will probably be the two seed.”
Coach Hutt also saw this as a hopeful district championship preview. “It would be disappointing and sad to see either of those guys get upset in districts,” Hutt said.
Peter Cung defeated Chris Kapetenov in the No. 2 singles matchup in straight sets without dropping a game for the Timberwolves, while in doubles play Josh Yi and J.T. Williamson defeated Simon Josephson and Joe Hall 6-3, 6-4.
Up next for Jackson is the 4A South district tournament, which the Timberwolves host beginning Tuesday.
