Upcoming outdoors events: Wetlands, avalanches, more

Learn about wetland critters: The Adopt A Stream Foundation presents “Wetland Wrigglers” at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, with zoologist Tom Noland and Adopt A Stream’s Cheryl Hartwig. Noland and Hartwig will collect insects and amphibians from the wetlands near the center and place them in water-filled trays for visitors to observe through microscopes.The pair will talk about the lives these creatures lead in their natural habitats, and using a video microscope, they will project some of them on a big screen. Crows: Learn about creepy, cool, fascinating crows at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, at Cascadia Coummunity College in Bothell. You’ll learn about birds, get a close-up look at study skins and enjoy kids’ crafts and games featuring crows. You can also sing up for a photo contest. RSVP to foundation@cascadia.edu. Garden: Help out at the Edmonds Wildlife Habitat Native Plant Demonstration Garden from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 26. Get more info here.

Harvest Festival: There will be a variety of events at Cama Beach State Park from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 26. There will be pumpkin decorating, wildlife events, face painting, bean bog toss and a bunch more. Costumes are encouraged. You can also visit the “haunted boathouse” from 2 to 7 p.m. Call 360-913-0253 for more information.

Learn about plants: At 10 a.m. on Oct. 30, you can join a zoologist and a naturalist for a walk through the woods by the Adopt A Stream Foundation’s Northwest Stream Center in Snohomish County’s McCollum Park. You will learn to identify native plants and about the values of those plants and their habitats. You’ll also get to preserve leaves using a plant press. Nature and art: Artist Tony Angell will share the art that illustrates his new book, “Puget Sound Through An Artist’s Eye.” Angell will speak at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park. Photography: Photos from two EvCC instructors will be on display the college’s Russell Day Gallery from Nov. 4 to Dec. 6. Lloyd Weller will show landscape and composite photography. Ellen Felsenthal will show work from her August horse trek across Mongolia and a series of abstract images of animals and landscapes. The photographers will speak about the exhibit from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the gallery, in Parks Student Union room 219, 2000 Tower St., Everett.

Avalanche safety: The Northwest Snow and Avalanche Workshop is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 3 in Seattle. The event teaches alpine safety and is targeted for both professional and recreationalists. Get more info and tickets here.

Learn to hike: Get the basics to make hiking more enjoyable and safer. The Mountaineers offer a free seminar at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 at their program center in Seattle. While the event is free, registration is required. Register and get more info here.
