Don't know much about history: On this day in 1948, President Harry Truman defeated Republican challenger Thomas E. Dewey in the greatest upset in American political history -- and the most embarrassing headline gaffe in American journalism history with the Chicago Tribune's "Dewey Defeats Truman."
With the benefit of hindsight, Tribune editors later said they wish they'd instead chosen the headline The Onion used years later: "Other Guy Defeats What's-His-Face."
