I received a card in the mail that the Beard family has sold their SAS shoe store and are retiring from business after 98 years. Long time Everett-ites surely remember the Chester Beard Shoe Store in downtown Everett from our childhood days. (For the story, see Julie Muhlstein’s May 2008 column, “Chester Beard built downtown business on shoes and service” http://bit.ly/18KZFCk) The Beard family carried Buster Brown shoes which were the essence of coolness in the ’40s and ’50s when I was a kid. And who can forget the foot X-ray machine in their store? All those rays and it’s amazing our feet haven’t fallen off. As I moved into high school I recall that they carried a limited amount of clothing in the back of the store and it was classic as well. Somewhere along the line we got into cheaper, cooler shoes but a dozen or so years ago my feet had a need for strong, sturdy shoes and I discovered that the Beards were selling SAS shoes. The SAS store has been sold so the service will continue but the fond memories of the Chester Beard store remains as a part of my childhood I hope I never forget. A fond farewell to the Beard family.
