Seahawks-Buccaneers game thread

Seahawks win in overtime

Steven Hauschka’s 27-yard field goal gave Seattle the victory in overtime, and it also gave the Seahawks their larges come-from-behind victory in franchise history.

A couple of quick injury notes, then I’ll check back with more in a new post later this evening…

Pete Carroll confirmed that Max Unger does indeed have a concussion. That means he’ll have to go through the usual protocol before being cleared, so we probably won’t know his status until late in the week.

Russell Wilson was a little banged up, Carroll said, but the quarterback said after the game that “I feel good. I got hit a few times, obviously. I got hit pretty good a couple times here and there, but you just keep getting back up and keep playing.’

Asked if he has any concern about next week, he said, “No, I’m good to go. I’ll be good to go for next week… I’ll be fine.”

Game tied at 24

A rather impressive comeback by the Seahawks has this game tied at 24 with 1:51 left. Russell Wilson, who has been a mix of good and bad (two picks, including one in the end zone), hit Doug Baldwin for a 10-yard TD to tie it.

The Seahawks were without C Max Unger on that drive. He’s out of the game with a concussion.

Russell Wilson TD run makes it a 10-point game

The Seahawks are still fighting an uphill battle, but are back in it after Russell Wilson led the offense on an 86-yard touchdown drive. That did, however, follow a Tampa Bay field goal, so the Bucs still lead 24-14.

Seattle’s offense functioning is obviously a good sign given that they need points to get back in the game, but the bigger issue right now is their inability to stop the run. The Bucs had 146 rushing yards after their first possession of the second half, and that comes six days after the Rams had 200 rushing yards.

And an injury update: Michael Bowie did indeed return, so no need for the Seahawks to get even further into their O-line depth.

Halftime: Tampa Bay up 21-7

The Seahawks have a long way to go if they’re going to pull off a comeback, but they did get one score back before the end of the half on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Kearse.

Yet on a day when little has gone right for the Seahawks, even that touchdown came with a negative—right tackle Michael Bowie going down with a knee injury. Bowie was able to walk off under his own power, but was limping noticeably. His return is questionable, the team announced. On that drive, the Seahawks had benched James Carpenter and moved Paul McQuistan from left tackle to guard, with Alvin Bailey coming in at left tackle. If Bowie can’t return, the Seahawks may move Bailey to RT with McQuistan going back to LT, then either putting Carpenter back, or going with Lemuel Jeanpierre at LG.

Tampa Bay leads 21-0

Yes, you read that right. The Seahawks are getting smoked at home by a winless team. Tampa Bay followed its 90-yard scoring drive with an 84-yarder that ended on another Mike Glennon touchdown pass. Coming into this game, the Seahawks had not allowed a TD pass at home this year, and in less than a half the Bucs now have three. Yes, three, because after Tampa Bay went up 14-0, Jermaine Kearse followed the ensuing kickoff, giving the Bucs a short field. After a completion and penalty took the ball to the 2-yard line, running back Mike James took a handoff, then threw a jump pass to Tom Crabtree for a touchdown.

Seattle will have a little over two minutes to try to respond with a score before halftime.

Bucs take 7-0 lead

Well, this isn’t the game most of us were expecting so far, is it? As mentioned earlier, the Seahawks haven’t been helping themselves, and now the Buccaneers have 7-0 lead early in the second quarter following a Mike Glennon touchdown pass to Tim Wright.

That play capped a 90-yard drive, which was the longest touchdown drive of the season for the Bucs. The drive was aided, however, by a rather dubious pass interference call on Earl Thomas.

Early mistakes hurting Seahawks

The thinking coming into this game was that the Seahawks shouldn’t have much trouble with Tampa Bay unless they hurt themselves, and so far that’s exactly what the Seahawks are doing, and as a result it’s 0-0 after one quarter.

Seattle opened the game with a promising drive that got them to the Tampa Bay 21-yard line, but Russell Wilson threw a pass behind Zach Miller that was intercepted by Mark Barron. On Tampa’s ensuing possession, Seattle helped the Bucs along with two penalties, though Tampa still ended up punting.

Also, Marshawn Lynch sat out the second drive with a knee injury (he had been on the injury report this week with a knee injury) and is probable to return. Lynch had four carries for 43 yards on that first drive.

Pregame

No big surprises in Seattle’s inactives, though rookie Jordan Hill is active after being a healthy scratch the past two weeks. The way the Seahawks rotate their defensive linemen, that mean Hill will almost certainly be involved in today’s action. The Bucs are going to be without starting safety Dashon Goldson, who will miss his second straight game with a knee injury. The former Husky was listed as questionable on this week’s injury report.

Also of note on the injury front, Seattle’s two injured tackles, Russell Okung and Breno Giacomini, were on the field earlier going through a pregame workout with Tom Cable, and both looked to be moving around pretty well. Both are expected to return to practice Wednesday, though Okung has to sit out until Nov. 17 because he is on the injured reserve/designated to return list, which requires him to miss eight weeks.

Seahawks inactives: QB BJ Daniels, S Jeron Johnson, RB Christine Michael, FB Derrick Coleman, T Breno Giacomini, T Caylin Hauptmann, DE Benson Mayowa.

Buccaneers inactives: RB Doug Martin, RB Jeff Demps, CB Deveron Carr, S Dashon Goldson, G Patrick Omameh, G Carl Nicks, WR Chris Owusu.

Starting pitching, a renovated offense and regression in the AL West are in Seattle’s favor, but injury issues, bullpen concerns and the Houston Astros could be a problem.
