Too many R-rated films being made

When my wife and I decided to go out and see a movie last weekend, I consulted The Herald's "Movie Times" to see what was playing at Regal 16 Theaters at Everett Mall. I was surprised to see that of the 15 different movies playing, 11 were R-rated.
It is widely known that of the top-grossing movies of all time -- from "Star Wars" to "Titanic" to "Harry Potter" -- only "The Passion of the Christ" earned an R for its graphic depiction of the violence perpetrated against Jesus.
Come on, Hollywood, why churn out a flood of films with R-rated content only a fraction of us will ever see, or care to?
We chose "Captain Phillips" (PG-13), as tense and well-done a movie as we've ever seen. We kept talking about it on the ride home, a sure sign of how thought-provoking it was. When the credits rolled, the audience applauded a great story well told.
I wonder how many, if any, of those R-rated films received a similar reaction?
