Mountlake Terrace volleyball sweeps Glacier Peak to advance to semis

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Behind the play of seniors Madison Eich and Justine Kelly, Mountlake Terrace rolled to a sweep of Glacier Peak with set scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22 in a 3A District 1 Tournament first-round match on Tuesday night.

Kelly finished with 35 assists and four aces, while Eich added 19 kills.

“Madison has been pretty beastly all season,” said Hawks head coach Marietta Snyder. “She is a good passer, just a well-rounded player. She doesn’t get too much into her own head. When she makes a mistake she moves forward. Justine is just steady, has great hands and has become a leader. Both are leaders for us and they do it with confidence.”

With the victory Mountlake Terrace advances to face Ferndale, a team that Snyder took notice of earlier in the season.

“We saw (Ferndale) in a tournament back in October,” Snyder said. “They’re a scrappy team. They have an outside hitter that’s strong and an outside hitter that runs for every single ball. They’re going to give us a tough match.”

The Hawks host the Golden Eagles on Thursday at 7 p.m., while Glacier Peak will battle Stanwood in a loser-out match at 5 p.m.
