Scam targets county utility customers

EVERETT -- Authorities are warning people in Snohomish County about a new telephone scam targeting utility customers.
The scammers are calling small businesses and saying that the owners are late on their utility bills, according to an FBI news release Wednesday. People are asked to provide financial information or send money using prepaid credit cards they can purchase at convenience stores.
The Snohomish County Public Utility District would never request that kind of information over the phone, according to the release. People should always call the utility company to check before providing any money or information.
To report being targeted by the scam, call the PUD at 425-783-1000.
Scams in general also should be reported to www.ic3.gov.
