KENNEWICK — A late penalty proved costly for the Everett Silvertips.
Brian Williams scored his second goal of the game during an overtime power play, giving the Tri-City Americans a 4-3 victory over the Tips on Saturday night.
With time winding down in regulation and the score tied 3-3, Everett defenseman Ben Betker put the puck over the glass from the defensive zone for a delay of game penalty with 12 seconds remaining. The Tips survived those 12 seconds to earn their point, but it didn’t take long for the Americans to win it in OT. Just 18 seconds in, with Tri-City on a four-on-three advantage, Williams converted a feed from Parker Bowles to end it.
Connor Rankin and Beau McCue also scored for Tri-City (12-9-0-2), which avenged its 2-0 loss at Everett one night earlier. Eric Comrie earned the win in goal with 29 saves.
Kohl Bauml, Tyler Sandhu and Joshua Winquist scored for Everett (13-3-3-0), which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Winquist looked like he had a second goal, and possibly the game winner, when he redirected the puck into the net with 1:42 remaining in regulation. However, after a video review it was determined Winquist hit the puck with a high stick, and the goal was waived off.
Daniel Cotton finished with 20 saves in net for the Tips.
Tri-City got of to a quick start, taking the lead 3:05 into the game when Rankin fired home a rebound.
Everett tied it on the power play at 5:37 with a rebound goal of its own, Bauml capitalizing following Matt Pufahl’s shot from the point.
The Americans regained the lead on the power play at 19:04, Williams getting a shot around a shot-block attempt and past a screened Cotton to make it 2-1.
The Tips received a golden opportunity to tie it late in the period when Tri-City’s Rodney Southam was whistled for a double-minor penalty for high sticking. However, it backfired on the Tips as Everett turned the puck over on the breakout, and McCue scored on a breakaway to make it 3-1 at 16:28.
Everett got back within one with 15 seconds remaining in the period as Sandhu got a stick to the puck, which pinballed past Comrie to make it a one-goal game again.
Then Winquist tied it at 4:58 of the third when, on the power play, he tipped in Cole MacDonald’s shot from the point.
