LAKE STEVENS — A moment of honesty landed a Marysville man in the clink.
The man, 26, was trying to become a Lake Stevens police officer. That plan failed in October when he dropped a truth-bomb during a ride-along.
The man reportedly admitted to the officer that, three years ago, he paid a friend $300 to steal his 2005 Ford Mustang in Everett. He then collected $11,930 in insurance money.
The man was arrested Thursday for investigation of first-degree theft, a felony.
“We take fraud and property crimes seriously,” Everett police spokesman Aaron Snell said Friday. “Even though this incident occurred years ago, we were informed of the crime, investigated it and are pursuing criminal charges.”
The man reportedly told the Lake Stevens officer that he wanted to get out of his car payment and debt. He also reportedly admitted to the theft on his employment application testing packet, records show.
The man appeared briefly Friday afternoon in Everett District Court and was ordered released without bail.
In court papers, police wrote that Snohomish County prosecutors determined the statute of limitations for theft had not expired.
