Camano firefighters build ramp for veteran
Members of the Camano Island Professional Firefighters Association took time out this summer to help a local veteran with access issues in his home.
Benjamin Cleaver, a Camano Island resident, regularly called the fire department to help with access issues on his property. Firefighters regularly respond to people with disabilities who have difficulties entering and leaving their homes, maneuvering through their homes or require lift assistance. In an effort to help Cleaver, firefighters spent an off-duty weekend building a wheelchair ramp to his front door.
“Mr. Cleaver served our country, and it’s fitting that we can help him in some small way,” said Ryan White, president of the Camano Island Professional Firefighters Association.
Volunteer firefighter and trained carpenter Mike Boyle headed up a team that also included Will Webb, Regan Olson, Ryan White, Darrel Tedrow, and Robert Shelley.
In addition to Cleaver, the firefighters association this past year connected a person struggling with hoarding to support services, raised money for the local food bank and helped low-income teens in need of school clothing.

Paramedics named to new position
Snohomish County Fire District 1 recently promoted four paramedics to serve as medical services officers: Chris East, Paul Easter, Capt. Gene Smith and Capt. John Magee.
Fire District 1 added the 24-hour medical services officer position to enhance patient care and expand support for first responders. The four paramedics will work rotating shifts to provide around-the-clock response for the more than 200,000 residents served by Fire District 1 in unincorporated south Snohomish County, Brier, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace and Woodway.
Paramedic marks 20 years of service
Lake Stevens Fire recognized Paramedic Jim Gilden at a recent Recognition Ceremony this month where he received his 20-year Achievement Certificate.
“A 20-year career is a testament to the commitment of a department member to the community. It represents many hundreds of hours of training and on-the-job expertise, and (is) worthy of recognition,” Chief Dave Lingenfelter said.
