SMOKEY POINT — Marysville police were trying to learn how a young man came to be fatally struck by a train here early Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at about 3 a.m. Wednesday just north of the rail crossing at 172nd Street NE, near 19th Avenue NE, Marysville police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said.
That’s not far from Lakewood High School.
The victim appeared to be in his mid- to late 20s, police said. His identity was not immediately determined.
Marysville’s collision investigation team was trying to determine the circumstances that led up to the young man’s death, Lamoureux said.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was headed from Portland, Ore. to Vancouver, British Columbia. It hit the man about 200 yards north of the 172nd Street crossing, railroad spokesman Gus Melonas said.
The man reportedly had a bicycle with him at the time.
The train came to a stop across 172nd Street, causing heavy traffic congestion during the morning commute, Lamoureux said. Detours were put up, but travel in the area was challenging for about six hours.
The death marked the 19th fatality this year on BNSF tracks in Washington, Melonas said.
It was the second this month in Snohomish County. On Friday, a 35-year-old Mountlake Terrace man died after standing on the tracks in front of a train in Edmonds.
