SNOHOMISH — Coming off a big win against Marysville Pilchuck a week ago, the Snohomish football team was looking to end its five-year losing streak against cross-district rival Glacier Peak on Friday night.
The Grizzlies had other ideas.
Led by sophomore sensation quarterback Ayden Ziomas, who turned the Snohomish secondary inside-out with seven touchdown passes, Glacier Peak rolled to 47-35 non-conference win over the Panthers before a large crowd at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The outcome was the sixth victory without a loss for the Grizzlies against Snohomish since 2011 when the district divided into two high schools.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Ziomas carved up the Snohomish secondary with precise passing and, on occasion, a knack for evading the Panther rush and turning a potential loss into a big scrambling gain. His numbers were impressive — 25 completions in 34 passing attempts for 440 yards. His seven touchdowns came on passes of 15, 11, 6, 5, 45, 31 and 11 yards.
Seiver Southard had three TD catches for the Grizzlies, Alex Garrett had two, and Bo Burns and Colton Bunt both had one.
Ziomas’ best Russell Wilson-like moment came late in the second quarter. With the Grizzlies facing a first-and-10 from their own 10-yard line, Ziomas was seemingly penned in by three oncoming defenders. But he ducked under the rush and sprinted upfield for a 25-yard gain, and Glacier Peak scored five plays later on a 5-yard pass from Ziomas to Colton Bunt in the back of the end zone.
Snohomish never gave up in the game, despite trailing from the early minutes. The Panthers gave their fans reason for a final big cheer with a 57-yard touchdown dash by running back Keegan Stich. The big gain gave Stich 236 yards on 27 carries for the game.
Panthers quarterback Brandon Jodock also put up some big numbers, throwing 38 passes and completing 21 for 254 yards with three touchdowns.
Glacier Peak struck first in the game, getting a touchdown on the sixth play of its opening possession, a 15-yard pass from Ziomas to Burns. Minutes later the Grizzlies were up 14-0 as Ziomas rolled left and found Garrett from 11 yards out.
Snohomish finally countered late in the first quarter with a 30-yard pass from Jodock to wide receiver Josh Johnston. But Glacier Peak wrapped two more touchdowns around a Snohomish TD in the second quarter, and the second of those TDs came with 42 seconds remaining in the half, lifting the Grizzlies to a 26-13 halftime lead.
Another Ziomas touchdown pass in the third quarter made it 33-13. Snohomish answered with a touchdown, but the Grizzlies broke the game open with two more TDs in the late minutes.
Both teams evened their season records at 1-1. Glacier Peak was coming off a 44-29 loss to Bothell in its season-opener last week, while Snohomish had defeated Marysville Pilchuck 63-13 in its first game.
