Silver lining for AquaSox in blowout loss

EVERETT — After suffering their worst loss of the season, a 13-1 thrashing at the hands of the Vancouver Canadians on Monday, the task is simple for the Everett AquaSox.

“We just have to try to have a short memory and flush it,” AquaSox manager Rob Mummau said. “It’s baseball.”

In a game where almost nothing seemed to go right, Mummau found a few positives that the team can take as they try to secure the Northwest League’s North Division first half championship.

“Richard White had a good outing,” Mummau said. “That was good to see. And (Christian) Carmichael really worked hard behind the plate. He had a few really nice blocks. And (Michael) Faulkner had a couple of hits. Some individual efforts were good, but just as a whole team it was kind of a down night.

Faulkner batted 2-for-4, finishing with two of the AquaSox four hits and White pitched three innings in relief, giving up two runs on two hits in three innings.

AquaSox second baseman Bryan Brito picked up one of the four Everett hits on Monday and is one of the team’s hottest hitters in the past 10 games, hitting .381 over that stretch.

“Bryan has been going the other way really well, seeing more pitches and tracking the baseball better,” Mummau said. “He’s squaring up to some baseballs, so that’s good to see.”

Brito and others need to string some hits together in order to find some success against the Canadians.

“If we can scrap together a few runs and try to build some momentum from there, that would be nice to just kind of have the lead,” Mummau said. “We haven’t had the lead on them, I don’t think, in the last three games. So if we can get an early lead on them, I think that would help.”

The AquaSox entered Tuesday’s game with a one-game lead over the Canadians and seven games to play in the first half of the season.

But, for now, the approach stays the same.

“I think it’s business as usual,” Mummau said. “There is always a little bit of a sense of urgency any time you have a game that night, but for the most part it is just business as usual.”
