SNOHOMISH — It took the Monroe girls basketball team about two quarters to get back in the swing of things after a weird week that saw them play just one game in the past five days.
Down by six, Monroe scored 19 straight points — and outscored Liberty 23-3 in the final quarter — to defeat the Patriots 51-37 in the opening game of the Snohomish Holiday Basketball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Snohomish High School.
“I told the girls the same message all year long,” said Monroe head coach Matt Chalfant. “We just play one play at a time. We compete all the time. … I said just keep competing. Just keep on fighting and we went on that run.”
Kylee Ferreira led the Bearcats with 12 points — all coming off 3-pointers — and Diedra Miller added nine for Monroe (3-3 overall), which outscored Liberty 31-11 in the second half after trailing 26-20 at halftime.
