SHORELINE — A go-ahead basket by Danica Bernabe with 10 seconds remaining in the game and the overall play of sophomore center Lily Gustafson sparked Shorewood to a 54-52 upset victory over previously unbeaten Glacier Peak in a Wesco 3A South game on Friday night.
The Grizzlies tied the score at 52 after converting on three free-throws after a crucial foul on a three-point attempt. The upset minded Thunderbirds then gave the ball to Bernabe, who connected on a shot from the baseline that gave the lead back to Shorewood. Glacier Peak failed to convert on muliple shots in the closing seconds, giving the Thunderbirds their first league win and the Grizzlies their first loss of the season.
“I told our team before that this was a game between David and Goliath,” said Shorewood head coach Erica Merkley. “We needed to be Goliah slayers and this was a great game to prove that we could do that.”
Gustafson’s 22 points was a game-high and she added to her 11 rebounds, six steals and two blocks. Merkley also credited the play of fellow sophomore Karrin Leazer in pacing the T-birds to the key 3A South victory.
“Lily has been our go-to,” Merkley said. “We’ve been asking her to take a more dominant role. She played all but 20 seconds tonight and worked real hard at both sides of the ball.” Shorewood implemented a press that was part of a 1-3-1 zone that established a disruptive force from the outset and held Glacier Peak to its previous low score total of the season.
“We wanted to shut down their bigs tonight,” said Merkley. “We played zone on them, we pressed the entire game and just disrupted the whole floor.”
