The Arlington City Council on Monday rescinded a scheduled rate increase for water, sewer and stormwater utilities.
The unanimous vote of the council means that residents and businesses will see no change in the rates charged for those utilities in 2014.
The city’s code calls for automatic rate hikes pegged to the Consumer Price Index for the Seattle-Tacoma-Bremerton metropolitan area. However, the city saved money last year from efficient operations of a new wastewater treatment plant and from purchasing less drinking water from outside sources.
The recommendation from the city staff and Mayor Barbara Tolbert was that the rate increase was unnecessary and savings should be passed on to the rate payers.
