Hear a noted author: Northwest author Sherman Alexie plans to make an appearance at a free event at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Everett Performing Arts Center. His coming-of-age novel, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian,” was chosen by the library for its Everett Reads! title this year. Go outside:The weather for the weekend looks lovely. Take advantage of it by getting outside. We have suggestions for two snow-free hikes here. If you want to go find snow, we have some great ideas in an earlier story here.

Choo choo The Northwest Model Railroad Show is Saturday and Sunday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. This popular show, which attracts thousands of enthusiasts every year, is a model-train lover’s paradise for kids and adults alike. About 100 vendors with lots of train and train-related paraphernalia will be set up for business. You can find out more here.

Cheer and eat: We hear there is a big game on Sunday. Featuring football. And Madonna. The Super Bowl kick off is at 3:30 p.m. and the game is on NBC. It’s up to you to provide the food and drinks, but if you need ideas, we have you covered.

Help animals: Shakaroo, a benefit for the Everett Animal Shelter, is Friday in Everett. The event includes music, dancers and a pet pageant. You can read our story about it here.

Skate for free: Comcast Arena is celebrating a big landmark: 4 million fans have entered the arena since it opened in 2003. To celebrate, skating is free at the arena’s two ice rinks from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Read more in our story here.
