GRANITE FALLS — Starting Monday, Snohomish County sheriff’s Sgt. David Bowman will serve as the Granite Falls police chief.
The Granite Falls City Council in December voted to contract with the sheriff’s office for police services. The contract is set to start March 1.
Bowman, 44, previously worked as a patrol supervisor in the city of Snohomish, which also contracts with the sheriff’s office.
“This is a great opportunity,” Bowman said Friday. “Granite Falls is one of the areas I’ve enjoyed working the most. It’s a good community.”
Bowman has been with the sheriff’s office since 2000, including stints as a divemaster, field training officer and precinct administrative sergeant. He graduated from Inglemoor High School in Kenmore and lives in Skagit County with his wife and children.
The Granite Falls Police Department’s officers must pass the sheriff’s hiring process to keep their jobs. The previous police chief, Dennis Taylor, was fired by the former mayor last fall. He’s now working in Lake Stevens.
One of the Granite Falls officers, Don Lauer, has been serving as interim chief since Taylor’s departure.
In addition to unincorporated areas, the sheriff’s office also contracts to provide deputies to local cities including Stanwood, Darrington and Sultan.
